Been working my ass off on my current project...details forthcoming...and feeling a little frustrated. Well, a lot frustrated. Might just be my menses influence, but it's not unreasonable to feel overwhelmed. I took a glance thru my poems because I appreciate my own counsel, and found this one I wrote in 2006. Enjoy!
Perseverance
Like pushing the cart with a wheel broken down the aisle
Like watching your dog run through the leaves set in a pile
It's frustrating
Like sitting down to eat your favorite pie without ice cream
Like fighting a girl twice your size and forgot your Vaseline
It's painful
Like Checkers chili fries on a late night tip
Like always leaving your waiter a bad tip
It hurts your belly
Like remembering which is a mammal, dolphins or manatees
Like doing crosswords in Mandarin or Cantonese
It pains your brain
Like having herpes and having to always say, I don't date much
Like not being careful and having six abortions in eight months.
It tears you up inside
It's when you're optimistic
Some say that's a sucker
You think things will go in your favor
But you coulda been luckier
You did the best you could
Better than your peers
But it's never enough for you
Failure is your greatest fear
And bigger people than you...
That label alone gets a choke...
Are doing about the same
So you can't dwell on being broke
Your time to shine
Will come in time
Just hold on tight
And get ready to ride
There's beauty in hard work
You stay humble, never a jerk
But if only the strong survive
Then you'll do this to stay alive
It's in your blood, every fiber of your being
So keep at it, persevere, and you'll receive everything...
